This Read Me contains technical information for Logical Journey of the Zoombinis and instructions for running the program directly off your computer's hard drive. Please consult this document if you are experiencing any problems running the program.
MACINTOSH and POWER MAC
1. The program will not run unless Virtual Memory is turned off. To turn Virtual Memory off, select Control Panels under the Apple menu, open the Memory Control Panel, and click Virtual Memory "off". You will need to restart your computer for this change to take effect.
2. Logical Journey of the Zoombinis requires the following extensions in order to run properly:
QuickTime 2.1
Sound Manager
QuickTime PowerPlug (for Power Macs)
QuickTime Musical Instruments
Many Macintosh systems already include these extensions. However, if you launch
Zoombinis and get a message stating Sound Manager 3.1 or QuickTime 2.1 needs to be installed on your computer, please do the following:
a) Look in the Extensions folder in the System Folder on your hard drive. If Quicktime 2.0 or an earlier version of QuickTime is in the Extensions folder, please drag this version of QuickTime to the Trash. You may need to restart your computer for this to take effect.
b) Double click on the Required Mac Extensions folder on the Logical Journey of the Zoombinis disc.
c) Click on QuickTime 2.1 and/or Sound Manager 3.1 along with the Sound Manager Control Panel, drag these from the Required Mac Extensions folder and place them into your closed System Folder located on your hard drive.
d) Please check to make sure that QuickTime PowerPlug (only for Power Macs) and QuickTime Musical Instruments are also installed into the Extensions folder in the System folder. You will not get a message stating QuickTime Power Plug or QuickTime Musical Instruments are needed but they must be in your extensions folder in order to run the program properly.
e) After you've copied the necessary extensions into your System Folder, restart your computer.
3. If you run out of memory while relaunching Zoombinis, try restarting your computer. This should restore enough memory to the system, enabling Zoombinis to run again.
***FOR POWER MAC USERS ONLY***
During our testing, we found that Logical Journey of the Zoombinis performs better on certain Power Mac systems when Sound Manager 3.1 is disabled and Modern Memory Manager is turned off. To turn Modern Memory Manager off, go to the Control Panels under the Apple Menu, open the Memory Control Panel and click Modern Memory Manager to "off". You will need to restart your computer for this change to take effect.
PERFORMANCE AND TECHNICAL TIPS
1. Logical Journey of the Zoombinis requires a minimum of 4900K of free memory to run properly. To check the amount of memory available on your machine, go to the Apple menu and select About This Macintosh or About This Computer. Look under "Largest Unused Block" to see if there is at least 4900K available.
To free additional memory and help Zoombinis run better, we recommend that you quit all other applications before starting the game. You may also want to use Extensions Manager to turn off all extensions except CD-ROM extension(s), QuickTime 2.1, Sound Manager 3.1 (only if you get an error message upon launching Zoombinis stating that Sound Manager 3.1 is required), QuickTime PowerPlug (if you have a Power Mac) and QuickTime Musical Instruments.
2. If you have a Power Computing 120 Mac clone, Sound Manager 3.1 is not compatible with your system. Please contact Apple Computer at 1-408-996-1010 for information on the latest updates for Sound Manager.
3. Your screen saver may interfere with Logical Journey of the Zoombinis. Please make sure your screen saver is turned off before your start the program.
4. If you are in Practice Mode and go to quit the program, you will not be prompted to save your game. Make sure to save your game before going into Practice Mode. Please check the User's Manual under Game Options for more information.
5. Your monitor must be set to 256 colors in order to play Logical Journey of the Zoombinis effectively. The program will load in 256 grayscale, but you may not be able to distinguish Zoombinis well enough to play the game.
6. When tasking out to the Finder while playing, the Mac desktop may shift colors. This is due to Logical Journey of the Zoombinis taking control of the system color palette of your machine. Your desktop palette will return to normal once you quit Logical Journey of the Zoombinis.
7. If you encounter problems with graphics while playing, and you're using a third-party video card, please check to see that you have the latest extensions and video drivers. The User's Manual for Logical Journey of the Zoombinis has a listing of video board companies and their phone numbers in the "If You Can't Get Started" section. You should be able to obtain the most recent device drivers for your peripheral hardware.

For better performance, you can install the program onto a hard drive with these simple instructions:
1) Create a new folder on the hard drive. You may give it any name.
2) Place the CD into the CD-ROM drive. Select the "Zoombini" and the "Mohawk.Mac" files and drag both to the folder you created on your hard drive.
3) Click on "Zoombini" within the folder to launch the game. You must keep the Zoombinis CD in the CD-ROM drive to play the game.
